Cavities and composite – a perfect combination for fillings to repair damage cosmetically and conservatively

Tooth decay is incredibly common. In fact, dental decay is the most prevalent chronic illness among children, more common than asthma or hay fever. In Texas, around seven of every ten third-graders have already experienced some form of tooth decay. Cavities or holes in the teeth result from this progressive and destructive process. Dental fillings are the “go-to” treatment for cavities.

True to its name, Favero Family Dental in Dentoncares for the very young and the young at heart alike. Our dentists, Drs. Stephen Blake Favero and Khourschid Favero, place fillings that are made from composite. Dental composite is a metal-free material made from resin (plastic) and glass or quartz particles. The color of the resin can be matched to blend in perfectly with the color of your natural teeth. Your repaired teeth should look like real teeth.

In the past, individuals with damaged teeth had limited options for materials to make dental restorations, such as fillings. Today, dental composite offers a toothlike appearance without sacrificing the strength and durability of the restoration. In fact, due to the conservative nature of fillings treatment with composites, our approach supports the strongest bond between the natural tooth and the filling material.

As a conservative treatment, only the damaged areas of the tooth are removed to make way for the filling. The more of the natural tooth structure we can maintain, the better off the repaired tooth will be over the long term. By minimizing the amount of synthetic materials introduced to rebuild a tooth, the tooth is less likely to be weak and vulnerable to future damage. Furthermore, restorations that have more of the natural tooth to adhere to support the most natural feel in the mouth, and they function as intended. Our patients from throughout northern and central Texas are delighted with the improved teeth, and they stay that way!

The process …

… is easy! Our dentists, Drs. Stephen Blake Favero and Khourschid Favero, start by preparing the damaged tooth. Preparation involves removing any damaged tissue. The tooth is cleaned, shaped, and conditioned for the strongest bond with the filling. Composite resin is placed to “fill in” the hole or cavity. Then, the composite is “cured” or hardened to the tooth. The finishing touch is a final shaping and polishing. Smile!
