Extraction may be just what the dentist orders, a guide to removing damaged teeth

There are some circumstances, however, when a tooth cannot be “saved” and must be removed. These scenarios include:
- Severe decay
- Badly broken teeth
- Serious fractures
- Worn or old dental restorations (promote re-infection)
- Deeply infected teeth
- To accommodate orthodontic treatment
- Root canal treated or retreated teeth that fail
- Teeth that are not good candidates for nonsurgical root canal therapy
- Teeth that are not good candidates for surgical endodontic procedures
- Impacted third molars (“wisdom teeth”)
Teeth that cannot be preserved may be removed with one of two techniques: simple or surgical tooth extraction. The former option is largely appropriate for teeth that are intact and visible above the gum line. Our dentists, Drs. Stephen Blake Favero and Khourschid Favero may easily access the damaged tooth without making incisions or openings in the tissues. The latter option is generally appropriate for teeth that are broken and not easy to access. The tooth must be accessed through incisions.

Complications, such as problems with healing, can arise due to behaviors that may dislodge the blood clot that forms at the extraction area. These behaviors include using straws, vigorously rinsing, and brushing too soon after treatment. It probably goes without saying: Don’t smoke!
